It was a moonlight night. The pale yellow full moon was slowing making its way up to the Bhopal sky.
The lush green lawns of the Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangralaya's open air theater , overlooking Bhopal city's Upper lake formed the backdrop of Begum Parveen sultana's musical concert.
The setting was just perfect for a classical musical performance by the legendary Padma bhushan awarded vocalist from Patiala gharana. The audience comprised of music-lovers of all ages. The Begum sang mellifluously and had the audience swaying their heads in consonance with her lilting scales. The Ultimate soprano, she has a vocal range of nearly four to five octaves.
The" Bhavani-Dayani " vocal in Raag Bhairavi was rendered beautifully. She mesmerised the music lovers who listened to her with rapt attention. Not only did she sing well but she also connected well with her audience praising them for being an enthusiastic audience. She liked that the people in the audience were good 'Kaan-sens" and hence never passed any opportunity to perform in the city of Bhopal. In between her renditions she would keep the listeners entertained by her witty remarks.... on the dry climate of the city.....the mosquitos.... requesting the organisers for tea in a playful manner after a long rendition. An extremely charming and humble lady she gave in to the audience's request for a famous song of her's from the movie KUDRAT- Hume tumse pyar kitna.
It was an evening well spent.
